SAREC (Vietnam - Sweden) 2004 - 2005 -Phase IV

Phase IV (2004-2005)
Title: Development of A Support System for Coastal Management to Preserve

Marine Biodiversity and Resources

In this phase the project consists of two components, entitled “Study on scientific, ecological, socio-economic bases to serve the integrated management and sustainable development of dunes and alluvial grounds in coastal estuaries: A case study at Co Chien – Cung Hau river estuary, Tra Vinh Province” to be implemented by the IO (Component 1), and “Study on technical support system to integrated coastal management” to be implemented by the HIO, selecting the Ha Long coastal area which covers the whole Natural Heritage Area of Ha Long Bay insisted by UNESCO (Component 2).
The overall objective of the project in this phase is to strengthen technical capacity and capability of the Institutes of Oceanography (Hai Phong and Nha Trang ones) in developing scientific basics for integrated coastal management in Viet Nam. This will be achieved through mutual exchange of scientific information and training of Vietnamese scientists.
Research objectives of this phase:
1. To improve the knowledge on coastal ecosystems and processes by applying modern technologies such as remote sensing, GIS, modeling, and ecologically relevant toxicity testing methods;
2. To develop databases of coastal environment and resources for integrated coastal management to serve sustainable mariculture and resources protection;
3. To strengthen methods of community based management for preserving heritage values, coastal biodiversity, typical ecosystems, and food security.
