National Seminar on Harmful Algae Related Problem

7-11 January 2005

Tentative Programme (.PDF)

The seminar will be organized in the Institute of Oceanography, Nha Trang, Vietnam aims to provide a forum for the exchange of knowledge and experience between Vietnamese authorities, seafood industries, and scientific communities concerned with harmful algal blooms (HAB).

Blooms of phytoplankton algae are naturally occurring phenomena in both marine and freshwater environments, and several hundred species have been reported to be able to form such blooms within the last few decades. Studies on harmful microalgae in Vietnam began only a few years ago at the Institute of Oceanography. More thorough studies commenced in 1996 and most recently the current project, HABViet, to conduct a basic study of the occurrence and distribution of potentially harmful marine microalgae along the coast of Vietnam. The Project was carried out jointly by the Institute of Oceanography, Nhatrang and Haiphong branches; Hue University of Science; Institute of Tropical Biology, Ho Chi Minh City; all Viettnam, and the IOC-Danida Science and Communication Centre on Harmful Algae at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. This linked the HABViet Project to the international Harmful Algal Bloom Programme of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC).
