The IOC/WESTPAC-HAB workshop was held from 15 to 17 March 2012, with 14 participants from 9 countries including China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Maylaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Russia and Vietnam. It focused on 1) overview of the achievements of the WESTPAC-HAB, 2) future activities of WESTPAC-HAB group. This is an important joint activity of the IOC/WESTPAC project “Toxic Marine Organism and their toxins” and the IOC/WESTPAC-HAB project, aiming at promoting recent research activities on HABs, enhancing human capacity in dealing with marine toxins problems and strengthening regional network and collaboration on research on marine toxins and harmful algal blooms. During the training workshop, the ELISA procedure for domoic acid detection in plankton and shellfish was introduced, and lots of practical lessons were carried out by the trainees to practice this hands-on technique.
