NANO Project Kick-off Meeting

Under the support from NIPPON Foundation (NF) and the Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans (POGO), from July 6th -7th, the Institute of Oceanography had hosted the kick-off meeting of the NANO (NF – POGO Alumni Network for Oceans) Project “Harmful Algal Bloom Remote Sensing Model for Southeast Asian Region”. Participants of the meeting were scientists from Institut de Recherche pour le Developpement (France), Marine Science Institute, University of the Philippines (the Philippines), Centre of Excellence in and Observational Oceanography, Bermuda (United Kingdom) and Vietnamese alumni who had participated in former NF-POGO training courses

Although this is a small project but it has a great significance because HAB is a recurring problem common to coastal countries. It causes great socio-economic impacts, and at times fatality. Success of the project will serve as an initial step for an operational monitoring and response system management of harmful algal blooms initially in local communities of Vietnam and the Philippines, and eventually expand the model application to the whole Southeast Asian region.

This pilot project is carried out as one result of the training courses on colour remote sensing application in oceanography funded by NIPPON - POGO, which were organized world-wide and in the IO since 2006 up to now.
