The 90th Anniversary of the Institute of Oceanography (14/9/1922-14/9/2012) and the First-class Independence Medal Ceremony

   On Sept. 14, 2012, in Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa), the Institute of Oceanography (VNIO) hold a formal ceremony to celebrate its 90th Anniversary and receipt of First-class Independence Medal. Attending the ceremony were Prof. Chau Van Minh, member of the Party Central Committee, President of Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), Prof. Nguyen Dinh Cong, Vice President of VAST, VAST’s former leaders and representatives from different departments and institutes, as well as the former and present leaders and staff of VNIO.

 

  The Ceremony was also honoured to welcome Mr. Le Duc Vinh, Vice Chairman of Khanh Hoa People’s Committee, Mr. Anatoly Borovik, Consul General of the Russian Federation in Vietnam, representatives from local and central authorities, universities, research institutions together with more than 200 national and international scientists participated in the International Conference Bien Dong 2012 to be held from 12 to 14 September 2012 on the occasion of the VNIO’s 90th Anniversary.

   During its 90 years of operation, along with the nation’s history, VNIO has gained significant achievements in national marine scientific and technological development, made great contributions to the national struggle for independence and unity, socialism building and sovereignty protection. Following this tradition, from 2007 till now, VNIO has continuously strived against every difficulties and problems to build its scientific capacity and facilities, gain remarkable research results and be now a strong oceanographic research center in the region, with increasing international prestige.

   Currently VNIO continues to confirm its position as one of the leading institutions in marine science and technology with many new achievements in fundamental research, applied research and technological development. In recent 5 years, it has carried out 5 national projects, 18 international projects, 9 VAST projects, 21 NAFOSTED-funded projects, 58 VNIO-funded projects, 158 contracts with local authorities and other institutions. VNIO continues to take the lead in scientific research for the establishment and management of marine protected areas, sustainable development of marine resources and environment as well as development of new target species for aquaculture export and inhabitant’s livelihood. 

   Since 2007, international maritime cooperation has been expanded and strengthened, contributes to enhance the role of Vietnam marine science in the region, to build confidence and increase cooperation effectiveness among States bordering Bien Dong. Beside its function to serve for scientific research, the Oceanographic Museum has contributed to educate and raise the community’s awareness on the protection and sustainable exploitation of marine resources and environment, prevention and reduction of the impacts of natural hazards as well as increase national consciousness on national maritime sovereignty and citizen diplomacy. With these research results, VNIO has published 3 Collections of Marine Research Works, 11 monographs, number of papers published in international journals and magazines was 66, in national journals and magazines was 303, and 45 papers were presented in national and international conferences and workshops. The manuscript “Paracel islands – Knowledge in the XX Century” was completed and will be published soon.
In the period from 2007 – 2011, each staff of VNIO has tried to do its best to fulfill assigned missions and tasks, and gained many significant achievement. The Institute is honoured to receive the Second-class Independence Medal in 2007, a certificate of merit from the Prime Minister in 2010, emulation flag from VAST in 2011, 8 certificates of merit from Khanh Hoa People’s Committee and Confederation of Labour, and many other awards for VNIO as well as for individuals and unions of the Institute. Party organization of the Institute continues to keep the title “Spotless, strong party organization” from 2007 to 2011.

  Based on all these achievements and on the occasion of VNIO’s 90th Anniversary, the President of Socialist Republic of Vietnam Truong Tan Sang has awarded the VNIO the First-class Independence Medal.
