ACIAR: Australia Centre for International Agriculture Research

Sustainable tropical spiny lobster aquaculture
This is a cooperative project between Vietnamese and Australian institutions and universities supported by ACIAR. They are CSIRO Marine Research (Australia), Research Institute for Aquaculture No. 3, University of Fisheries and Institute of Oceanography (Vietnam).

Duration: 2004-2007.

Focus area: Meeting rising demand for animal protein (promoting sustainability of culture fisheries in Asia and Australia.

Objectives: to enhance the sustainable production of tropical spiny lobster in Vietnam (and indirectly more widely throughout SE Asia) and to develop the technology that facilitates commercial establishment of tropical spiny lobster grow-out aquaculture in Australia.

It comprises five major subprojects:

Subproject 1: Ecological impact of lobster seed collection in Vietnam
Subproject 2: Reducing post-capture losses of lobster pueruli
Subproject 3: Husbandry best-practices for lobster grow-out
Subproject 4: Indigenous lobster aquaculture development in Australia
Subproject 5: Capacity-building and technology transfer
